Course Information
8th Grade Science
Our focus in science this year is earth science. Earth science is the study of the earth through four specific branches of science: geology, hydrology, meteorology, and astronomy. In this course, we will study these branches through a “hands on” scientific inquiry approach. The specific topics you will learn about are storms and weather, plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes, energy resources, space, rocks and minerals and earth history. Specific skills we will continue to refine are the scientific process (asking questions, making hypotheses, designing and carrying out investigations, interpreting and communicating results) and the engineering design process (defining problems, designing and testing solutions).

8th Grade Math
Our focus in 8th grade math this year is pre-algebra. In pre-algebra, students are guided to discover concepts through labs, experimentation, and deductive reasoning. The cognitive act of discovery enables students to truly understand and better remember concepts for the long term. Specific topics you will learn and practice are: order of operations, solving linear equations, geometric relationship, transformations (congruence and similarity), rational and irrational numbers, Pythagorean theorem, graphing linear and non-linear functions and equations, exponents and scientific notation, and volume (cone, cylinders and spheres).
